Why western Pennsylvania is looking at solar now
On June 1, 2026, Penelec’s residential supply rate rose 11.9% to 13.143¢/kWh — about 21¢/kWh all-in once delivery is added. Penn Power’s rate climbed too, to 13.478¢/kWh. Those increases are already on the bill, and every month you pay the utility, you own nothing.

Is this “free solar”?
No — there’s no such thing as free solar. This is a $0-down plan: nothing upfront, with a monthly payment designed to be lower than what you’re paying the utility now.
Are you a utility or a government program?
Neither. My Home Quote is an independent company that connects you with licensed solar pros. We are not affiliated with Penelec, Penn Power, or any government agency.
Will it actually lower my bill?
That depends on your roof, your usage, and your utility — which is exactly what the 60-second check looks at. If the numbers don’t work for your home, a licensed pro will tell you straight.
Does solar actually work here in the winter?
Panels run on daylight, not heat — they keep producing on grey days, and cold weather doesn’t hurt them. If anything, panels run better cool than hot. Snow generally slides off a pitched array on its own. Winter is the low season and summer is the high season, so a system here is sized for the whole year rather than for any one month. And you stay connected to your utility the entire time — nobody is taking your house off the grid.

What should I ask the company that calls me?
Three things, and write the answers down: what exactly am I signing — a lease, a power purchase agreement, or a loan; what is the total amount I’d pay over the full term, not just the monthly figure; and are there any fees rolled into the financing on top of the system price. Any company worth working with will answer all three without hesitating.
